Nestled into the woods in Ely Minnesota, this small 1,100sf cabin was designed for Tom and Naomi Liester and their three boys. Travellers by nature, they wished for a permanent getaway that they could call home base in between road trips. Naomi spent her childhood at her grandmother's cabin up north and both she and Tom went to college in Duluth. Together, in 2021, they found a wooded lot in Ely, MN that spoke to their northern hearts. It was time for them to create their own cabin memories. Just big enough, the small cabin has two bedrooms and one bath along with a sleeping loft. A large, vaulted living space containing the kitchen, dining room and living room adds an expansive feel to the small cabin. This space opens in to a retractable screen-in porch with a sleeping loft perched above. The sleeping loft has a large western view window placing them higher into the trees. The screen porch focusses the view towards a beautiful ravine below. The cabin design was sited on a high open precipice to minimize clearing and site disturbance. Sitting on bedrock, the cabin was designed for slab on grade radiant heating. Energy efficient windows, a tight thermal envelope and a wood burning stove makes this cabin comfortable year-round. The large windows let in ample light even though the cabin is surrounded by trees. The walls were kept light to keep the space bright and the green accents meant to echo the forest outside. In the summer the windows and doors can be left open for fresh air cooling and cross breezes. The 24 gauge standing seam metal roof and white washed cedar siding create low maintenance durability so the family can spend more time outdoors when they are there. The inspiration for the half "A" design was derived from the picturesque old A frame cabins Tom and Naomi saw as children. Naomi loved her grandmother's simple cabin, but they wished for their own unique design affectionately calling it "Little Cabin in the Woods." The design allows for snow to shed to the side of the home while also protecting the entrance from the elements. Tom and Naomi's design requests complete their quintessential cabin vision. Tom's being a wood burning stove in the living room, and Naomi's being a large picture window seat for planning their next travel adventure. Both wished for a circular wood-fired hot tub which warmly rounds out their vision.
