Carefully curated, Dave and Marian Peterson's South Beach Lakehouse is a modern two-story home on the shore of Crosslake, MN. Dave, an industry renown creative director, dove head first into his new directorial role. He had a vision for their home that would evoke memories throughout his life. Old stone cabins up north, European cobblestone streets and modern city architecture to name a few. The Lakehouse was to be a haven for friends and family, and anyone else who wanted to come and soak up sun and good conversation. The vision called for clean, modern, gable roof lines connected by a large entry wall of glass windows allowing guests a see-through view to the lake upon arrival. Simple in appearance but complicated in execution, the glass connection between the two gable forms was built using Marvin Modern windows and structural steel reinforcements. The upper level floor that occupies this space is supported by exposed structural steel beams and wood decking. It floats in front of the glass in order to leave the large wall of windows uninterrupted. While the design was coming into focus, Dave and Marian's overarching feel for the home began with the stone masonry cladding, the star of the show. The stone was designed to wrap the exterior and interior of the home as well as the fireplace and chimney. The team worked closely with Orijin Stone who created multiple mock-ups for review. First the stone was selected and curated to the desired color, size and shape, then the mortar color selected and applied with the desired trowel appearance. Dave and Marian had found their perfect blend, reminiscent of Dave's memories. With the stone selected, a neutral warm material palette became the leading backdrop. Dave and Marian began calling their home South Beach as a nod to the warm beachy palette that had emerged. Light concrete countertops and sinks blend in well with the white oak cabinets, wood walls and ceiling beams. Additional beachy touches adorn the bathrooms with a marine rope light figure Dave created and the pebble stone tile selected by Marian. During the design process, Dave and Marian were always designing for their family, carefully considering where their children, and grandchildren would sleep. Each room was created for their children with built-in beds for their grandchildren. Their new home was to be the family's home, passed down from generation to generation. "Let the record skip," was one of many creative phrases Dave would often use encouraging fresh ideas. The design and build team unknowingly took a master class from Dave and his art direction. In turn, he trusted the team and process resulting in a truly collaborative effort. The result, a home that everyone played a part in creating Sustainable Aspects - The home embodies the principles of long lasting natural and durable materials such as stone, cedar, oak, metal roofing - Locally sourced high performance Marvin windows - Natural daylighting and ventilation - Energy efficient building envelope and mechanical system - Radiant slab heating - Generational & age-in-place living with the owner's suite and living all on the main floor - A family home to be passed down from generation to generation
